A man in a Disney story falls into the sea and spends what feels like a few moments with a mermaid. When he surfaces, one hundred years have passed. Desperation works the same way. What feels like a side hustle, just one more step, just a bit longer, can consume five, ten, twenty years before the person wakes up and looks around. It always feels like just one step away. It never is. The distinction between driven and desperate is precise. Driven people have a clear internal direction that advances them. Desperate people are pulled by the fear of not having what they want. Desperation feels like motivation but it does not produce the same trajectory. Over time, the gap between what each produces becomes enormous.
